It shows how coal can meet that need and be mined, moved and used in ways that meet stringent environmental standards. Putting figures to the proposition that there is a great deal of coal in the world (and above all the U.S.) that can be produced at reasonable prices if big enough investments are made, this study concludes, with "cautious optimism," that if the right steps are taken (often well before the coal is needed) a tripling of coal consumption can be the bridge to a future when new sources of energy.

Coal was the foundation of the modern world. It powered the engines of the Industrial Revolution, and warmed, lit and transported the populations of the sprawling cities which they created.

Considerable international concerns exist about global climate change and its relationship to the growing use of fossil fuels.

Carbon dioxide is released by chemical reactions that are employed to extract energy from fuels, and any regulatory policy limiting the amount of CO2 that could be released from sequestered sources or from energy-generating reactions will require substantial.

That peril can be reduced by choosing coal as the bridge to the future. Unless coal provides that bridge, the future is bleak. How to make that choice is explained in the WOCOL report and in detail for each country in a second volume, FUTURE COAL PROSPECTS: Country and Regional Prospects, Ballinger/Harper & Row, June Author: Carroll L.

The first volume, Coal: Bridge to the Future summarizes the conclusions of the authorities under a moderate coal consumption forecast of 5, million tons of coal equivalent (mtce) and a high 7, mtce upper-bound projection for world coal use through the year.

Perhaps the most precious example of failed national long-range energy forecasting—remembered fondly, I am sure, by all those who have been around energy matters for some time—is the goal of U.S. energy independence charted by the Nixon administration for the thought that the self-sufficiency can be realized by the yeardespite the fact that his forecast called for the Cited by: A future contract will include a bridge over US 19 which will cost $15 million.
